Shoulder Pain

Shoulder problems are common and the literature would support the idea that over 10% of the population will have at some point some type of shoulder problem.  You can't be sure what is causing your problem until you see an Orthopaedic Surgeon.  One of the most common problems about the shoulder is Rotator Cuff Disease.  The four muscles that hold "the ball" on the "socket", much like a golf ball on a tee, are called the Rotator Cuff Muscles.  Overlying the top tendon is a roof bone, called the acromion.  If the acromion happens to have a prominence, then the tendons may "impinge" on the acromion causing tendonosis and eventually a tear.

There are many conservative alternatives prior to the tendons actually tearing.  Exercise programs carefully tailored for the problem can be helpful.  Sometimes a steroid shot can be used.  In making the diagnosis, an MRI is often required.

An accurate diagnosis is really the most important thing. There are really a large number of things that cause shoulder pain.  In the differential diagnosis list there are so many different causes of shoulder pain that entire books have been written by many authors on the subject.  The best way to have the best chance to find out what is wrong with your shoulder is to see your Orthopaedic Surgeon for an exam. Click below to go to my website at the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and read more about the shoulder.  When you get to the site, click on "patient info/forms" and then scroll down to "shoulder pain".
